Backing up your database preserves the information in your posts and pages, as well as other important stuff that your WordPress powered blog uses to function.

Making a copy of your database is like taking a snapshot of your blog at the exact moment that you back it up. Anything you write or do after you backup your WordPress database will not be included in the backup.

There are several ways to back up your WordPress database and a varying level of expertise is involved with each way. This post will focus on the easiest way for a WordPress user to back up the database.

Let’s take a look at a plugin that not only allows you to back up your WordPress database on demand, but also allows you to schedule it as well. The plugin I recommend is WP-DB-Backup. There are other plugins that do the same thing, and nothing against those plugins, but I have never had the need to try them because WP-DB-Backup works so well.

Let’s take a look at how to install this plugin and make a backup of your WordPress database.

Step 1: Install WP DB Backup
Go to your Plugins menu and select “add new”. Once you get to the search box, type in “WP DB Backup” and press the “Search Plugins” button. The plugin you are looking for is titled WP-DB-Backup and is written by Austin Matzko. Click “Install” on the right hand side,

After you click the “install” link on the right, a window with a red install now button will appear, click “install now”.

After you click “install now” the plugin will be installed and then WordPress will ask if you want to activate the plugin, click on the “Activate Plugin” link. Congratulations! WP-DB-Backup should now be properly installed.

Step 2: Getting to the WP-DB-Backup User Interface
Now that you have the plugin successfully installed, lets make a backup of the database. There are two ways to get into the WP-DB-Backup user interface to do this.

• From the Manage or Installed Plugins page, simply find the plugin that says WordPress Database Backup and click on the link that says “Tools → Backup”.
• The other way to get into the user interface is to go to the left menu and expand the tools tab and then select the Backup link.

Step 3: Making WordPress Database Backups with WP-DB-Backup:
In the User Interface you will need to check the boxes under the title “you may choose to include any of the following tables”. This will ensure that you capture all of the data from your plugins in the database backup as well.

Next, Scroll down to Backup Options, where you have three options: save to server, download to your computer, or e-mail. Select download to computer and then click on “Backup Now!”. You should now see a file on your computer with an ugly name full of numbers and letters that ends with .sql.gz. Unzip and check the contents with a text editor. Microsoft Word will not work, so use TextEdit on Mac or on Windows you can use notepad to open the unzipped file. All you are looking for is that the file contains a lot of text so you know that the backup worked.

If that went smoothly it is time to schedule your backup. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the Scheduled Backup box. Most of us will be fine with a weekly backup, but depending on the importance and frequency of your posting you may want to choose one of the other options.
